Fox59 is doing a news story tonight about computer gaming. So far the commercials are making it seem like everyone who does computer gaming is ruining thier lives. I'm wondering if this will be a fair report or something sensationalistic. Will they use the Wide Brush to paint every gamer as an addict? Or will they balance it and say only some are like this?
I am a computer Gamer. I play usually 2 hours a night 8:00 to 10:00 (or 8:30 to 10:30 depending on if I have to put my son to bed or not), and usually not every night either. I try to spend some nights downstairs with my wife watching TV. Unfortunatly not much interests me on TV. I have a family, I have a sucessful career. Am I addicted to gaming, maybe. I like to, but I don't have to. I like to game, I do game. However I won't be interviewed for this type of thing, why, because I haven't ruined my life with it.
I hate to tell you but some people will get addicted to almost anything. It used to happen with BBSing, it used to happen with other types of games. Some people are more likely than others to become addicted to things.
I've written about gaming here before, I like the interaction that comes with online gaming, finding a good server where people chat between rounds and stuff is wonderful. Finding a group that has a community is fantastic. This is why I like hardgaming.com.
I will have to stay up late tonight and see how bad the Yellow Journalism is.
Posted by ianshot at February 10, 2004 08:23 AM | TrackBackHear hear. I think one of the best things we got for general stress-relief is our PS2. Sometimes we play it every night. Sometimes we don't. Right now, I've been kind of burned out on it, but I'm starting to feel the call again.
We have successful careers too, and we do outdoor stuff and socialize with people too. I hardly think we're ruining our lives, and gaming usually uses up the time (like right after work) when we're too brain-dead to do anything but watch TV anyway.
Posted by: echoweaver at February 10, 2004 11:30 AMIt wasn't actually that bad. They said that 1% of all americans is addicted to games. so 5 Million people across the US. They stuck to the facts, they had a few interviews with people, but nothing too bad.
Nothing that was going to make my mother call me and ask if I was an addict.
